Why I Built VCFSE.co.uk: Bringing Our Communities Together

By Steve7 min read

Our towns are full of people doing good things, but how do we find out about them?

Across Wigan, Greater Manchester and the wider North West, community groups, charities, churches, social enterprises and volunteers are making a real difference to people’s lives every single day.

From local events and community activities to mental health support, volunteering opportunities and services for people who need a helping hand, there is so much happening around us.

But there is one question I keep coming back to.

How do we make it easier for people to find out what’s happening in their own communities?

That question is one of the reasons I decided to build VCFSE.co.uk, a platform designed to help connect community organisations, share information and make opportunities easier to discover.

The problem with finding local community information

Think about how you find out what’s happening in your town.

Perhaps you see a Facebook post, somebody shares an event, or a friend tells you about a local group. Maybe you discover a support service months after you needed it.

We’ve all probably missed something simply because we didn’t know it existed.

Information is often scattered across different websites, social media pages, noticeboards and mailing lists. Some organisations have the resources to promote themselves effectively, while smaller community groups may struggle to reach the people who would benefit most from their work.

And what about the people who aren’t particularly active on social media, or those who don’t know which organisations to contact when they need help?

The information might be out there, but that doesn’t mean people can easily find it.

I believe we can do better.

Why Wigan and our wider communities need a central information hub

Imagine having one place where you could discover local community events, find charities and support services, explore volunteering opportunities and learn about the organisations working in your area.

A place where you could find out who’s doing what, what’s available and how you could get involved.

That is the thinking behind VCFSE.co.uk.

I want to help make community information easier to access, whether you’re a resident looking for something to do, a family searching for support, a volunteer wanting to give something back, or an organisation hoping to reach more people.

This isn’t about replacing existing websites or telling organisations how to run their services.

It’s about helping people discover what already exists and making it easier for organisations to connect with one another.

Because sometimes the answer isn’t creating another service. Sometimes it’s helping people find the services that are already there.

Supporting charities, community groups and social enterprises

Behind every community organisation are people giving their time, energy and often their own resources to make something happen.

Many work with limited budgets, small teams and volunteers who are already stretched. Getting noticed can be difficult when you’re competing for attention online.

For smaller charities, Community Interest Companies (CICs), faith groups and voluntary organisations, better visibility can make a genuine difference.

It could mean reaching new volunteers, attracting more people to an event, finding a potential partner or helping somebody discover a service they desperately need.

That’s why I want VCFSE.co.uk to be useful to the people doing the work, not just the people searching for information.

The platform aims to bring together resources and opportunities for the voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise sector, including:

  • Community organisations and directories: Help people discover local groups, charities and social enterprises.
  • Local events and activities: Make it easier to find out what’s happening and how to take part.
  • Volunteering opportunities: Connect people who want to help with organisations that need support.
  • Funding and grants: Help community organisations discover potential funding opportunities and resources.
  • Partnerships and collaboration: Encourage organisations to connect, share knowledge and explore opportunities to work together.
  • Guides and useful resources: Make practical information easier to find for people running or developing community projects.

The ambition is to help create stronger connections across Wigan, Greater Manchester and the wider North West.

Stronger communities start with better connections

One of the things I believe strongly is that we shouldn’t all be working in isolation.

There are organisations tackling loneliness, supporting people with disabilities, helping families experiencing hardship, promoting mental health and wellbeing, providing activities for young people and creating opportunities for older residents.

There are also countless volunteers quietly making a difference without ever asking for recognition.

Imagine what could happen if more of these organisations knew about one another’s work.

A community group might discover a partner for a new project. A charity might find volunteers through a local connection. A resident might discover a group that gives them somewhere to go, something to do and people to talk to.

These connections matter.

We cannot expect people to access opportunities they don’t know exist. Nor should smaller organisations have to rely entirely on luck or social media algorithms to get their message across.

Better connections can lead to better opportunities, and better opportunities can make a real difference to people’s lives.

This is about people, not just technology

Building a website is one thing. Building something that people actually find useful is another.

I don’t want VCFSE.co.uk to become another website that launches with good intentions and is forgotten a few months later.

For it to work, the information needs to be relevant, accessible and useful. Organisations need to be able to share what they’re doing, and residents need a reason to come back.

That means working with community groups, listening to what people need and continuing to develop the platform around those needs.

It also means recognising that communities are different. What works in one town or neighbourhood might not work in another.

The aim is not to tell communities what they need. It’s to help make the information, opportunities and connections available to them easier to discover.

And this is where your involvement matters.

How can you get involved?

If you’re part of a charity, CIC, church, voluntary organisation, community group or social enterprise, I’d love you to explore VCFSE.co.uk.

Tell us what you’re doing. Share your opportunities. Help people discover your work.

If you’re organising local events, running activities, recruiting volunteers or providing support services, making that information visible could help it reach someone who needs it.

And if you’re a resident, have a look at what’s available. You might discover an organisation, activity or opportunity you didn’t know about.

The more useful information we can bring together, the more valuable this resource can become.

Of course, this isn’t something one person or one organisation can achieve alone. It needs participation, cooperation and a willingness to share information for the benefit of our communities.

Let’s make it easier to find the good happening around us

I started building VCFSE.co.uk because I believe our communities deserve better ways to share information and connect people with opportunities.

We have incredible people doing important work. We have organisations supporting residents through difficult times. We have volunteers giving up their time, and community groups creating spaces where people can feel welcome and included.

But good work deserves to be seen, and useful information deserves to be found.

I don’t believe one website will solve every challenge facing our communities. That would be unrealistic.

But I do believe that making information easier to find is a practical step in the right direction.

If VCFSE.co.uk helps someone discover a local support group, find a volunteering opportunity, connect with another organisation or attend an event they would otherwise have missed, then it is doing something worthwhile.

This is an invitation to our communities: let’s share what we’re doing, support one another and make it easier for people to get involved.

Visit VCFSE.co.uk and help us bring more of our community information together.

Because there is so much good happening around us. It’s time to make it easier to find.
